Vancouver Winter Olympics - Collectible Coins

The 2010 Winter Olympics are coming to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from February 12 to February 28, 2010. These will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada and the first to be held in the province of British Columbia.

An agreement has already been struck with the Canadian Olympic Committee to produce commemorative collectible coins for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. The 2010 Winter Olympics will also mark the third time that the Royal Canadian Mint will be involved with commemorative coins for an Olympic event being hosted in Canada. Just as previous games in Montreal and Calgary, the Royal Canadian Mint will be introducing a new denomination to the Vancouver Olympic coins. The non-circulating legal tender commemorative coins will have a face value of $25, a Canadian first.

Olympic Coin History

In 1952 the first Olympic themed coins were struck to commemorate the summer games which took place that year in Helsinki, Finland. Ever since that time, coins have played a major role in symbolizing and honoring the country and city that has been selected to host the Summer or Winter Olympic games.

Starting in 2007 and leading up to the games in 2010, 17 coins will be put into circulation to represent the Vancouver Winter Olympics. This will be the largest collection of coins in circulation for any Olympic Games to date. The coins minted for the Vancouver games will feature two commemorative Lucky Loonies, a 25-cent winter sports themed coin, and even a coin in which Canadian fans will get to vote on which athletes should be featured on the design. These collector coins will all be highly detailed works of art which should be worth far more than their stated face value and should be sought after by all coin collectors for years to come!

Included in the Vancouver coin collection will be premium gold coins, limited edition holographic silver coins, and even a pure gold one kilo coin. The pure gold coin will be sure to please even the most savvy coin collector.

Coins can initially be purchased via the Royal Canadian mint and from select Canadian financial institutions, but as they make their way into the hands of the public, they will be featured on this site via eBay auctions.
